Does a movie ever REALLY scare you anymore?

I ask because nothing scares me movie-wise anymore. Nothing besides a "Dammit where the fuck did that cat come from" type scare.

Is there such a thing as being too gratuitous with violence?

Can over use of gore and torture actually take away from a movie instead of enhance it?

What's the worst Japanese film adaption? (FYI my choice is Dark Water)
