The Best Of Akira Hokuto: The MVP of 1993

This set focuses on Akira Hokuto's magical 1993, which is considered by many to be the best year of her career. She feuded with Shinobu Kandori of the LLPW promotion during the inter-promotional period, where the major promotions active in women's wrestling in Japan at the time combined to run shows with dream match-ups that attracted some of the largest cards in history. At Dreamslam I on April 2, 1993, Hokuto defeated Kandori, which was given a perfect five-star rating by Dave Meltzer and is considered by some to be the greatest match in history.

Disc #1

Clips from LLPW 1/4/93

Akira Hokuto vs Debbie Malenko - 1/4/93 (All Pacific Title match) (VG-)

Akira Hokuto/Etsuko Mita/Mima Shimoda vs Eagle Sawai/Harley Saito/Miki Handa - 1/24/93

Akira Hokuto vs Shinobu Kandori - 4/2/93

Akira Hokuto/Aja Kong vs Shinobu Kandori/Eagle Sawai - 4/11/93

Akira Hokuto/Yumiko Hotta vs Bull Nakano/Aja Kong - 4/16/93 (handheld)

-----------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------------

What can be said when I am not a Joshi historian? Fucking amazing matches? Akira Hokuto takes my #1 spot away from Manami Toyota? The Debbie Malenko match was great, straight up wrestling, german suplexes, solid wrestling. And it's Debbie Malenko! Most Americans would be like, huh? I'm like, MORE! 2nd match has Las cachores Orientales vs. LLPW. Great match. Intensity, moves, emotion, bitterness, Harely Saito, Mita and Shimoda, I love Eagle Sawai, Mimi is great. But the bottom line is the hatred these wrestlers display in this feud, in this promotion vs. promotion match. Then we get the Dreamslam match between Kandori and Hokuto where Dave Meltzer shot a load in his Zubaz, and it was off the hook but in a peculiar way. Tons and tons of blood, a top ten blood fest. A week later and Kandori, such a fucking bad-ass as I have seen that makes me wish i had NOT watched her in LLPW 2000 before going back to see her when she was young, she goes to work and tries to rip Hokuto's arm off the bone. Aja Kong gets all pissed off. Kandori gets her heat back. Kandori makes insane gestures that would rile up the mousiest crowd. I wonder if Kandori and Aja got it on before long after this match considering the disrespect that Kandori showed to Aja as she tore Hokuto's arm off. Then I get a great handheld match with Bull Nakano, who might when it is all said and done, become my favorite women's wrestler of all time if I get to see more of her matches. The underdogs in Hotta and Hokuto win one out from under the monster tag team. Another top tier match.

I have to admit how I feel stupid to try and comment on Joshi wrestling when I know so little, even as I have watched a ton of matches. The history of the sport, the time lines, the feuds, the tag teams, the title histories, it is a lot to cover and try and learn. I reiterate, this blog and posts are not to teach anyone anything. They are for my own cataloging of matches and dvds I have seen, but make no mistake that Japanese women's wrestling, at one time hottest thing on the planet, gets not the respect it deserves from many contemporary fans and wrestlers themselves. The fact a Michelle McCool may one day be regarded as a Hall of fame woman wrestler makes me sorta sad. Not sick, I'm not a fan boy. It's just sad. Someone should gather the matches, get them on American TV. Jimmy's grave! I'm would like to get TNA Impact fans one night of good wrestling. How many of them would turn that shit off after watching these women of the past and present kill themselves, put on better matches then most male wrestlers, and draw fucking huge crowds during the 80's and 90's, and most wrestling fans have no clue.

Jumping Bomb Angels: Noriyo Tateno and Itsuki Yamazaki

Prez, I will readily admit I have seen little of the early days of Joshi. I will get my hands on a Best of The Jumping Bomb Angels one of these days from my boy Jeff Lynch. I don't believe either Angel did super great as singles. Japanese tag team wrestling, Japs and Americans, there is alot of good stuff out there. I want to see more Crush Gals (Chigusa Nagayo & Lioness Asuka) and even Glamour Girls matches (Judy Martin & Leilani Kai).

There are too many GREAT women wrestlers from both continents that I just can't get enough of and feel almost stupid to not know more.

don't forget Marine Wolves: Akira Hokuto and Suzuka Minami

I get sick when people talk about Michelle McCool as being this great wrestler, or trish Stratus... I mean seriously, fuck that shit. Let's keep it in context.

I haven't seen much of Akira Hokuto ,but what I have seen was really good. Plus she's really tough I mean she took a botches super tombstone piledriver that broke her neck and still continued the match. Everytime she went for a stomp she'd hold her neck with one hand to keep it in place that's toughness god dammnit.

I'll probably watch Clash of Champions XIX and Great American Bash '92 tonight for the NWA tag title tournament.

1.Dr. Death Steve Williams and Johnny Ace vs Kenta Kobashi and Mitsuharu Misawa AJPW 4-3-95
This match was great. There was so much emotion in this match it seemed so personal with Ace and Kobashi hating each other and Misawa and Williams being long time rivals. There was lot's of good double team action in this match, in particular this powerbomb diving crossbody move from. What also really stood out in this match was a part during the middle where Williams just starts to clean house becoming this unstoppable machine of destruction and near the end of the match where Ace just keeps taking all this punishment and still manages to survive. Despite how you may feel about Ace in the WWE his AJPW stuff was great. In this match he has a really good DDT and a pretty good moonsault.

2.Manami Toyota & Yamada vs Megumi Kudo & Combat Toyota - AJW 04-02-93
This match was really good. Yamada and Combat Toyota were the powerhouses of their respective teams. This match started out as a quick paced brawl before descending into tag team madness. Their were spike piledrivers, doomsday spears, and diving clothesline powerbomb combinations and at one point in the match everybody involved starts doing all these dives to the outside. Unlike some matches were people take all this punishment and then lose to a damn schoolboy or small package this match ends with this brutal suplex.

Next:The Miracle Violence Connection(Dr. Death Steve Williams and Terry Gordy) vs Stan Hansen and Joel Deaton AJPW 6-27-93

Just got through watching Bill Watt's Mid South Wrestling Giants, Midgets, Heroes & Villains Volume 2. I am a huge fan of the old Mid South Territory and this DVD brought back so many good memories.

Here were the matches

1)Dick Murdoch confronts Ted Dibiase prior to NWA Championship match w/ Ric Flair
2)Ted Dibiase vs Ric Flair for the NWA Heavyweight Championship

This was the start of Dibiase's face turn. Murdoch attacks Dibiase before the match and leaves him a bloody mess. Dibiase gets bandaged up, and has the match anyway. A VERY bloody Dibiase had Flair right where he wanted him, but was knocked out of the ring and Flair wins by countout and then Mursoch gives him a brainbuster on the concrete floor.

3)Jake the Snake Roberts & The Barbarian (John Nord)vs Richard Dye & Paul Brown
A fun squash match

4)Superstar Bill Dundee & Little Tokyo vs Wendell Cooley & Little Coco Mixed midget tag match
w/ Run in by the Fantastics

Nothing much of note here.

5)Ted Dibiase & King Kong Bundy vs Dr Death Steve Williams & Magnum TA
A VERY young Dr Death. Pretty good tv match

6)Hacksaw Butch Reed Interview

7)Midnight Express w/ Jim Cornette vs Junkyard Dog & Hacksaw Jim Duggan No DQ Tag Team Championship
w/ run in by Hercules Hernandez

The MX retain the belts through all kinds of interference by Cornette and Hernandez runs in with the coal miner glove.

8)Dr Death Steve Williams vs Hacksaw Jim Duggan Football Helmet Match
Ted Dibiase comes out and says he knocks Duggan out in the back
9)Hacksaw Jim Duggan Interview after being attacked by Dibiase

Start of an angle between Duggan and Dibiase. Dibiase had returned from one of his many tours of Japan and jumped Duggan in the parking lot though its never shown. A bloodied Duggan is interviewed.

10)Kamala The Ugandan Warrior & The Black Ninja Kendo Nagasaki w/ General Skandar Akbar vs Mike Jackson & Art Crews
One of my favorite jobber/enhancement workers of all time is Action Mike Jackson so seeing him in this squash match was neat.

11)Nicolai Volkoff vs Mike Jackson & Randy Barber Handicap Match
See previous comment

12)Hacksaw Jim Duggan Interview & Video
It is obvious that whatever music was used originally for this has been dubbed over probably due to copyright issues

13)Hacksaw Jim Duggan vs One Man Gang w/General Skandar Akbar Bounty Match
Another classic fun Mid South

14)Kerry Von Erich vs Ric Flair JIP Freebirds turn on Von Erich
Footage from WCCW Star Wars though much more shown then on the WWE WCCW DVD. Was shown because of the Freebirds time in Mid South.

15)King Kong Bundy vs Junkyard Dog 5 count match
w/ run in by Buzz Sawyer & Missing Link

To this day, there have been very few people who were as over as JYD was in Mid South. JYD actually slams Bundy.

16)Jake the Snake Roberts & Dr Death Steve Williams vs Terry Daniels & Shawn Michaels
That's right boys and girls, HBK the jobber/enhancement worker

17)Mad Dog Buzz Sawyer video with comments from Precious Paul Ellering
Concerning his upcoming matches with JYD

18)Mad Dog Buzz Sawyer vs Nick Patrick
Commentary by Dick Slater and run in by Hacksaw Butch Reed & Jim Duggan

Reed, Duggan, Slater all get involved post match as the future NWO Ref gets destroyed

19)One Man Gang & The Assassin vs Ernie Ladd & Iron Mike Sharp
Run In by Ted Dibiase

What's there not to like about this match with so many good old timers

20)Hacksaw Butch Reed vs Jim the Anvil Neidhart TV Tournament Match
If you havent seen early Neidhart, his beard is very different then the Anvil y'all are used to.

21)Andre the Giant, Junkyard Dog & Mil Mascaras vs Tully Blanchard, Gino Hernandez & Killer Kahn
22)Video on Andre the Giants foot injury with Vince McMahon, Freddie Blassie & Killer Kahn

Match footage is from Paul Boech's Houston wrestling. Much is discussed how Kahn hurt Andre's ankle. SO strange to see WWF footage on a Mid South program

23)Tom Stanton & Cowboy Lang vs George Weingroff & Lone Eagle Midget mixed Tag Match

24)The Missing Link vs Junkyard Dog
Called Max the missing link. JYD is again so over

25)Nicolai Volkoff vs Hacksaw Jim Duggan w/ run in by Krusher Darsow
This was a hot fued with the All American Duggan against the Russians. And unlike his WWF run, Duggan wasnt some mindless idiot

26) The Fantastics vs Mad Dog Buzz Sawyer & Dick Slater & Dark Journey
The Heels beat the pretty boys from the city of Angels. The team of Slater and Sawyer was very good and underrated in the big picture of pro wrestling in the 1980's.

27) Kamala w/ General Skandar Akbar vs Iceman King Parsons
Run in by Hercules Hernandez
Iceman seemed to be holding his own by Hernandez wearing a Friday disguise rolls a stunned Iceman back into the ring for the pin

28) Humongous w/Oliver Humperdink vs Jim Duggan TV Tournament Match
Sid Eudy looks unstoppable and yet Duggan beats him.

I loved this DVD. Many good memories of one of the best promotions in the country

AKIRA HOKUTO MVP 1993

Disc #2

Akira Hokuto/Bull Nakano vs Toshiyo Yamada/Takako Inoue - 4/24/93

Hokuto and Bull start off kicking Takako Inoue's ass. When Yamada gets in she starts throwing shoot kicks. Nakano sells the beat down real good. Nakano is awesome as both a big woman/monster, but she isn't Aja Kong either, who no sells everything. Joshi strong style by Toshiyo. Works Bull's leg and takes her down. Takako comes in but then she gets a few spinning crescent kicks from Hokuto. Yoshida tries to help and gets taken to the outside for a brawl in the seats. They get back in the ring for the greatest back and forth 7 minutes of tag team wresting I think I have seen in a long time. Just seamless. Akira and Bull get most of it with crazy good offense and a non-stop work rate. Easily a solid 4* match.

Akira Hokuto vs Toshiyo Yamada - 5/3/93 (Japan Grand Prix)

Really great match, which is simply the standard rating for every match in this series. You take everything that Hokuto does, from the spinning crescent kick, top rope dropkick, the powerbombs, the attitude, the intensity, then you have Yamada on the other hand with the enziguiri kick, the stiff kicks, the ultra stiff kicks, you multiply everything by a million, and you have this insanely hot match. Hokuto finishes it off with a Northern Lights Bomb, which I would more likely describe as a side piledriver or an Emerald Frosion. Does the trick.

Akira Hokuto/Toshiyo Yamada vs Yumiko Hotta/Manami Toyota - 5/8/93

Seriously? Would I even dare to risk making some stupid remark when talking about this masterpiece of a match? People kicking each other in the face. That's it. PEOPLE KICKING EACH OTHER IN THE FACE. 5 star match.

Akira Hokuto/Kyoko Inoue vs Aja Kong/Bull Nakano - 6/3/93

Wow, am I suddenly a huge Bull Nakano match? Yes, I am. Kyoko Inoue.... why did I not know she was going to be in the States this past year for CZW? I would have just to see her. Again, no need to describe or detail any of these matches. You are either smatrt enough to go out and get them and watch the greatest wrestling ever to take place on the planet Earth, or stew in your ignorant broth of stupidity.

Akira Hokuto vs Yasha Kurenai - 6/11/93

Kurenai spits in Hokuto's face. Then Kurenai hits about 7 choke slams on Hokuto in a row, real fast, bam! Bam! Bam! Then Hokuto hits one northern lights bomb and gets the win. This was a strange match with a message I am not sure about. Probably, "Don't fuck with me."

Akira Hokuto vs Suzuka Minami - 7/4/93 (Japan Grand Prix)

Minami is a wrestler, I have learned, who just got lost in the shuffle when she came up, as she was surounded by legends like Toyota, Nakano, Hokuto, etc., but she was absolutely a great wrestler and was awesome in this match playing the underdog.

King of Europe Cup 2007

Talk about an abundance of talent all in one place. This is one of the best tournaments I have ever seen. It took me a month to get through it for personal reasons, but it was off the hook to say the least. Every single match was really incredible. The English guys were massive, Zebra Kid, Martin Stone, not to mention Nigel and Doug Williams. Here are the guys and the promotions they represented:

Promotion Country Representative
One Pro Wrestling United Kingdom Jody Fleisch
Chikara United States Claudio Castagnoli
Combat Zone Wrestling United States Chris Hero
Dragon Gate Japan Ryo Saito
Independent Wrestling Association Mid-South United States Matt Sydal
International Wrestling Syndicate Canada El Generico
International Pro Wrestling: United Kingdom United Kingdom Pac
Premier Promotions United Kingdom Doug Williams
Pro Wrestling Guerrilla United States Davey Richards
Pro Wrestling Noah Japan Go Shiozaki
Pro Wrestling Unpluged United States Trent Acid
Real Quality Wrestling United Kingdom Martin Stone
Ring of Honor United States Nigel McGuinness
Total Nonstop Action Wrestling United States Rhino
westside Xtreme wrestling Germany Are$
World Association of Wrestling United Kingdom Zebra Kid

Here are the tournament brackets and the spoilers:

Image

Davey Richards put on some crazy ass matches. I am finally sold on davey as a real star in the future. The resemblance in his work and his attitude are similar to Dynamite Kid, hence why people always say that about him. His match with Go Shiozaki was five star quality. His match with Zebra Kid, same insanely great match. Can you get any better then Pac for a high-flyer? Packed tourney from top to bottom, can’t say that enough.

What I found really awesome was that every match ended cleanly except for one. Doug Williams run through the brackets. He would low blow his opponents at the opportune time and then small package them for the win. Doug was heeling it up big time in his own home country. Fast forward to the tourney final, Doug Williams vs. Nigel McGuinness. Here is where…. I tell you to go find this somewhere out there on the internet or buy it on Highspots.com, you won’t be denied one minute of classic high-level independent professional wrestling, and the finish to the tournament was one of the best stories I have seen. It was not mind-blowing, it was just smart, simple, and totally fantastically fun.

One more thing to note about this show. Dean Ayass and Dan Reed were simply incredible on commentary.

Akira Hokuto MVP 1993

Disc #3

Akira Hokuto vs Harley Saito - 8/5/93 (Japan Grand Prix)

Instant Harley Saito fan after watching her matches on this dvd. I have seen her before but not at this stage in her career, and her almost obvious hatred of Hokuto, not to mention her great athleticism makes her fun to watch. I can see maybe she isn't one of the top talents of her time but she makes up for it with her intensity. Hokuto maybe brought out the best in her.

Akira Hokuto vs Manami Toyota - 8/21/93 (Japan Grand Prix)

Awesome match. First match in a very very long time, not a shittyy WWE match, where I was extremely mad at the finish. I thought manami fought so hard for this win only for Hokuto to pull it out. Insane match, both women bust out the best moves, the rivalry is great, it is just pure greatness.

Akira Hokuto vs Yumiko Hotta - 8/21/93 (Japan Grand Prix Finals)

Right now this is the best match-up in history. maybe Manami Toyota vs. Toshiyo Yamada is the best rivalry, maybe it is Hokuto vs. Kandori. I watched this on my little dvd player and even my dad was impressed. Talk about stiff kicks! Insane, maybe my favorite singles match on this set, but in the end they are all great, but this one is greater then great, it is surreal. Hotta nearly kills Hokuto with a powerbomb/piledriver maneuver, drops her right on he neck. Sick stuff.

Akira Hokuto vs Rumi Kazama - 8/25/93 (All Pacific Title match)

Nice match, nice stuff from the smaller Kazama, nice leg holds and leg locks.

Akira Hokuto vs Numatchi - 9/5/93

I love Japanese womens squash matches. They are never dull, and they always make the necessary point or come across as they are supposed too. Numatchi is a champ, taking a nasty gut wrench power bomb for the loss. Hokuto almost laughing at her opponent across the ring.

Akira Hokuto/Suzuka Minami vs Yumiko Hotta/Takako Inoue - 9/5/93 (UWA Tag Title match for vacant titles)

This match is perfect. The tag champs are great, love Minami Suzuka, who together with Hokuto make up the Marine Wolves (unless I am wrong). Then there is more Hotta which eans more stiff kicks to the face. Takako Inoue is hot and she is awesome and she also knows that she needs to be in top form for this match in order to win and that is what we get, two challengers that realize that they have to pull out all the stops, even play dirty, in order to win the UWA Tag Titles. The ending to this match is appropriate as I got tired, to be honest, of seeing Hokuto run through the entire LLPW and Zenjo roster. GREAT match.

Man, it's crazy what we watch today and some of the matches they had in Zenjo. There is no comparison. And I'm watching a Al Snow Guest Booker and he talks about how he doesnt like star ratings and its all about money, and a match isnt good it all depends on if you got across what the booker wanted you to tell, the story, and I agree I guess but... I also assume All Japan made insane money at that time because these matches would make me buy a ticket.

and the other thing and I think I already posted it, I have a few shows on my desk top I want to watch and clean it up, some Guest Bookers and a shoot and a best of whatever... and from then till either I die or I run out of stuff or I get tired and for a laugh I'll switch up, but I'm watching straight up Zenjo and straight up Japanese womens wrestling

OK, this was pretty good. Al Snow is a smart guy, although he did make a point of saying no one knows shit about pro wrestling until you have to feed your family in the business. This shouldn't have been a guest booker, but maybe because I am used to GBs being the booking exercises through the whole dvd. Al just talked thru 89% of it, but he had sound ideas and explained the business, heat, the bottom line which is making money, how the best match on a card is the one that makes the money, and how, funniest thing, Dave Meltzer is the biggest worker/ con artist because he never worked in the business but everyone listens to him. Funny stuff but also very in depth and interesting. They also talked about WWE and OVW.

1.The Miracle Violence Connection(Dr. Death Steve Williams and Terry Gordy) vs Stan Hansen and Joel Deaton AJPW 6-27-93
Before the match even began Doc and Gordy jumped Hansen and Deaton as they were enteing the ring. Hansen made one hell of a last stand and Deaton kept trying to rescue his partner ,but in the end the Miracle Violence Connection was too much for them.

2.Gary Albright & Dan Severn vs. Salman Hashimikov & Vladimir Berkovich UWFi 12-5-93
Albright was a beast in this match and his strategy involved chaining all his suplexes into the submissions near the ropes on purpose knowing that the other team using the rope breaks would wear down there points. For most of the match Berkovich was dominated until Hashimikov tagged back in and slammed and suplexed the hell out of Severn. Severn is a good wrestler ,but has really bad striking in this match and I've noticed that in every UWFi match I've seen with Severn he's usually presented as a chump of sorts.

3.Fuerza and Juventud Guerrera vs Rey Mysterio Sr. and Jr. AAA 1995
I really enjoyed this match. It started out with Mysterio Jr. showing just how quick and agile he used to be. Every single man had an awesome powerbomb which was surprising because you don't really see that many powerbombs from Mysterio Jr. and the Guerreras had this really nice missile dropkick powerbomb. Juvi had some really nice suplexes and there was this weird spot near the end where he and Mysterio Jr. both low blowed each other.

4.Toshiaki Kawada vs Hiroshi Hase AJPW 5-2-99
Kawada and Hase are like each other's dopplegangers in terms of style. They're both really good on the mat, both have some awesome kicks, some really brutal slams, and hell they both don't have front teeth. This was Kawada's return match after suffering an injury and started out with some brawling before a brutal uranage from Hase turned it into some mat grappling. The rest of the match would transition between brawling and then transition down to the mat with Hase going after Kawada's injured arm with various locks. Speaking of Hase he has one of the best/brutal uranage of all time I mean he explodes out of nowhere with it and it ends like a goddamned piledriver.

SHIMMER Vol 37 part #1

Image

Kellie Skater vs MsChif

Good match from both competitors to start the show.

Mena Libra vs Courtney Rush

Good match where both competitors impressed me, I would like to see them wrestle again.

Christina Von Eerie segment where she gets beat up by Sara Del Ray.

I didn't like this segment because of the bad acting, I am sorry to say. I thought the girls were given too much to do. Von Eerie kept getting her ass kicked, and then getting the strength to apologize. So all the offense that Death ray got in would suddenly be forgotten. It just came off bad. Sara should have taken her out one time. Less talk about respect and locker rooms, that is already getting old in pro wrestling.

Tomoka Nakagawa vs LuFisto

Super match from these guys, underrated LuFisto makes her return versus Nakagawa and they might delve a little into the silliness at times, but they have a great technical match.

Miya Yim & Jamilia Craft vs Regeneration X (Leva Bates & Alisson Danger)

I was wowed by Mia Yim's kicks. Everyone was very good in this match. It was still more comedy than serious. I did not like Leva and Allison's gimmick, dressed up like Dr. Who characters. I thought they were more like the guys from Men in Black. Portia is good at this point on commentary talking about the tag division. Regeneration X wins, I disagree, I think Leva Bates need a lot more work.

Cheerleader Melissa & Madison Eagles segment

Eagles is a better talker than Melissa, who was pretty decent this time.

Sara Del Ray vs Christina Von Eerie

They set this up with that segment in the beginning, and then they even delivered it with a count out on Del Ray, which made her lose it and she beat the crap out of Von Eerie. A great platform to start off a match between two hot names in womens wrestling. Good stuff.

Athena vs Cheerleader Melissa

Wow, what a great match. Athena's stock goes up IMO. She IS in the ring with Cheerleader Melissa, who is one of the best around. Great match, very athletic competition.

Rebeca Knox comes out and announces she is a manager and she is managing the following team:

Saraya and Brittany Knight vs Ariel and Nikki Roxx

The Knight Dynasty is a mother/daughter tag team, and they were great instigating the crowd. I read somewhere that one of the fans actually spit at Saraya. She is a 20 year veteran of the British circuit, her daughter has been training since she is 15 years old, her father is also a wrestler as are her brothers. They were taking on the fan favorites of Ariel and Nikki Roxx. Good tag team match, old school, double teams, phantom tags, lots pof distractions, and a good finish.

Serena Deeb vs Daizee Haze

Cool match, great wrestling, hot crowd, Daizee is great as a heel, dressed in all black, Serena has a special connection with the fans, they really like her a lot. The women worked body parts, told a story, match had a great pace. Serena wins with the spear.

( I'll finish this disc tomorrow)

Best of Akira Hokuto 1993 MVP

Disc #4

Akira Hokuto vs Aja Kong - 10/9/93 (Hokuto asks it to be non title, due to knee injury)

Akira Hokuto vs Rumi Kazama - 11/9/93 LLPW (Hair vs Hair match)

Akira Hokuto/Manami Toyota vs Aja Kong/Sakie Hasegawa - 11/12/93 (Tag League) (G+)

Akira Hokuto vs Mayumi Ozaki - 11/18/93 JWP
---------------

Aja Kong is OK, I will always like her, but she's not as good as her contemporaries in getting me into her matches. Might be because she plays the monster. The Rumi Kazama match is a hair vs hair match I think, guess who loses their hair? Good match. Tag match was off the hook good and one of the top matches in this set. The Ozaki match is good, but I have always been luke-warm on Ozaki except in tag matches where she rules it. Good match anyway. I think Hotta ruins the singles matches because she really brings it against Hokuto and vice versa.

Disc #5

Akira Hokuto/Suzuka Minami/Etsuko Mita/Mima Shimoda vs Devil Masami/Dynamite Kansai/Mayumi Ozaki/Plum Mariko - 11/28/93 (Captain Falls)

Akira Hokuto vs Shinobu Kandori - 12/6/93

Akira Hokuto/Manami Toyota vs Kyoko Inoue/Toshiyo Yamada - 12/10/93 (Tag League)

Akira Hokuto/Manami Toyota vs Kyoko Inoue/Toshiyo Yamada - 12/10/93 (Tag League Finals)

1993 MVP Award

Captain’s Fall match was really good, with Devil in her prime, a rare Plum Mariko match for me (need more), and the LLPW/Los Cachorras feud in effect, great match. Then we got Kandori and Hokuto in a no-hols barred match? What does this mean exactly? Well #1 I am not sure if their were styips in this match, but the types of punches being thrown were not legal in a wrestling match. Hokuto is bloody within the first minute. These women punch each other in the face. Straight up, punch to the mouth. Not WWE punches, joshi punches. Kandori could have killed Hokuto with the last bunch of uppercuts she threw, I am saying upper cuts like Ryu in Street Fighter. She lands the last one for the win in a crazy match I don’t think I will ever see the likes of again. In the U.S., my #2 point about this match is, if we have a no rules match, we see the garbage, we see the brawling around the outside, we see nothing. here we see two people slug each other full force, in the mush. Insanity. Those last two tag matches? Oh, they weren’t bad. They weren’t good. They were amazing.

If you think you are a wrestling fan, even if ten years from now you will hate yourself for wasting your time watching this as I might one day regret having wasted time and energy on fakefighting, I will at least have the honor, the privelege, and the pride in the fact that I watched the best out there. Akira Hokuto, best ever. Dangerous Queen.

Jessie McKay vs Ayako Hamada

Real solid back and forth match, big moves, and then it also didn't go 15 minutes, probably under 9 minutes, but it was still awesome. hamada, one of the best, the woman who got me into ladies wrestling back in 2000-2001. Jessie McKay, proving herself every single time out, she has not had a bad match that I can remember in SHIMMER. I always feel she has to prove herself somehow, but I don't think she will bear that cross anymore as far as I'm concerned.

Canadian Ninjas (c) vs. Hiroyo Matsumoto & Misaki Ohara aka 3S

Ninjas are great heels. Seven Star Sisters are awesome and have great double team moves. Good match. I'm a Matsumoto mark, I think she's pretty and very talented. Big title change here.

Madison Eagles (c) vs Mercedes Martinez

Hard-hitting match, brawl on the outside, I think they should have given them more time, but Martinez came off strong. The grueling hits, the stiff shots, really made the match.
