Recently, Gene Okerlund was interviewed by Inside The Ropes. One of the questions asked was about Ric Flair and Gene gave a rather interesting answer.

"I have tremendous respect for what Ric has accomplished," Okerlund said. "He could have been the Babe Ruth, so to speak, of WWE. But, he decided after that match with Shawn Michaels and his induction into the Hall of Fame, that he still should be working.

"Now, you've got a guy who's 60-years-old," continued Gene. "That's probably not what the office would want to put out in the ring and have him work every night. Ric wanted to work every night, hence, he moved on to greener pastures. I don't think it was the right move for him and he and I have talked about it, but he did move on."

Gene was also asked about why a match between Flair and Hulk Hogan didn't happen during Flair's initial run with WWE. While Gene said he wasn't sure, he believes the egos of the people involved stopped it from happening.

"I've heard so many different theories as to why it didn't happen. Randy Savage, by the way, had a little stroke at that time and he thought it was premature. He shared that information with Vince. Ric was getting a little tough to work with at that point with the demands he was making on the office. Hogan's going to do it one way; his way. Period," Gene stated.

"So, I think all those components lead to the downfall of that match actually taking place in Indianapolis and and it became a Flair/Macho Man match and a very good one. But, not the match that everyone wanted to see," Okerlund concluded.

You can check out Okerlund's comments below:

Gene Okerlund is pretty much a straight shooter, from what I heard from these interviews and ones I've listened to before.

Also, nobody has came close to his voice for the backstage interviews. He really makes anything seem classy, when he's on.

Agreed. Gene is/was the best interviewer of all time. He made you feel a sense of legitamcy when he talked to the guys even though it was absurd pro wrestling. People like Warrior & so on needed a moderator like him to ground some of those promos.
"..Fuck it!"

If we ever do an "IYH Vacation"... we should all chip in for whatever fee Gene would charge.

Flair shouldn't be wrestling, but he can contribute considerably in other ways.... more so with the E since they have more platforms/projects for him to excel in.

Problem like I said is he's a desperate moron who doesn't know how ot handle himself. He's a man child, he bailed on WWE because they didn't want him wrestling anymore and you all were defending him as he went to TNA for the love of the business. I still don't think WWE is overly worried about bringing him back in to be honest with you

Pretty much every time Flair was out there, he made me laugh or was entertaining as hell. He needs to be on TV.

Nothing says entertaining like bleeding all over yourself at 60 years old in your underwear because you are a manchild

Ric Flair elbow dropping dress suits and imaginary wrestlers is some of the funniest television ever.

Well, so now both you and Gene say he left because he still wanted to wrestle... That was kind of the point of that whole discussion... :)

No the point was Flair wanted to be a performer and wanted to get money from the otuside of the WWE they balked Flair bailed then after all 6 months(which was Kevin Nash's predicted date) he was broke again then went over to the Hulkamania Tour Disaster and then went with Hogan to TNA and then ripped off like 50 promoters at the end of the day He went to TNA for money and its really not funny to me that besides two or three segments he spent most of it doing nothing and bleeding all over himself. Remeber for all this love about Ric Flair him and Hogan helped draw that dismal .76 Main Event rating

You're actually doing a little revisionist history there... You never talked about him leaving because he still wanted to perform. You only talked about the money... And please don't say that I'm trying to make this about "you" when it's you that keeps wanting to bring up all people here that "defended" him when we all recognized that the guy doesn't make any good decisions for himself, it's just that he simply can't help his need to be "Ric Flair". And boy-howdy does that have nothing to do with ratings...

If you let wrestlers personal lives effect how you feel about them then it's impossible to like any of them.

No I"m bringing up the point that you and a couple of others for some reason tried to sell Ric Flair was in TNA only for the love the business and it had nothing to do with money even though I showed you video evidence of him burying the video. So basically I just wanted to make sure it was known I was right it had nothing to do with him loving the business

Well, you're wrong and you missed the point...

You're wrong in that you actually made it quite clear that you felt his only motivation for leaving the WWE was money and his only motivation for going to TNA was money (knowing full-well the sweetheart deal he was walking away from for essentially doing nothing). In this thread you are admitting he left because he wanted to wrestle again - not for money - which was our point...

And you missed the point in that you keeps saying "his love of the business"... His "love" is for being "Ric Flair" and all that that entails (being able to wrestle, do promos, live the lifestyle)... If it was for the love of the business, he wouldn't do things like refusing to be a babyface even when most just wanna cheer the guy, which is something that goes into him not making very good decisions..

I said he wanted to wrestle never said outside of the WWE go back and look it took a good time before he finally started wrestling again over a year in fact. HOwever him leaving had a lot to do with money.

and no I wasn't wrong no matter how desperate you are to prove otherwise. You denied FUCKING VIDEO of him saying he'd never work for TNA and burying everyone involved as proof he had no interest in TNA
