A WWE event in Brazil came to a screeching halt Thursday evening ... when local law enforcement stopped a live match and threatened to arrest Chris Jericho for desecrating the Brazilian flag.

It all went down during a match between Jericho and C.M. Punk -- who was proudly waving the flag in the ring. Jericho took the flag away, crumpled it up and kicked the flag out of the ring ... and that's when police stepped in and put a stop to the event.

We're told Jericho was informed that desecrating the national flag is a crime in Brazil ... punishable by incarceration.

Cops gave Jericho an option -- apologize to the arena ... or go to jail. Chris chose the former ... grabbing the mic and telling the crowd he immediately regretted his actions. Cops allowed the event to continue.

Sources connected to the WWE tell TMZ ... the flag stunt was NOT planned or approved by WWE officials.

The WWE has just released an official statement saying, "Chris Jericho has been suspended indefinitely due to an irresponsible act of denigrating the Brazilian flag at a WWE event in Sao Paulo on May 24. The WWE has apologized to the citizens and the government of Brazil for this incident."

I understand the whole when in another country it's important to respect their customs and laws. If Jericho was unaware that his action would cause arrest, then it's an honest mistake and not that big of a deal. He apologized and it should be water under the bridge. Lord knows wwe did some crazy stuff between the US and Canada and both counties flags were treated disrespectfully.

Regardless, for wwe to suspend him indefinitely is stupid.

If what happened was a mistake and Jericho didn't know that it was against the law, WWE should just let it go. Not suspend him. It's not like he knew what he was doing was wrong, the guy was just trying to play up his role and be a heel. There's nothing wrong with that. It's just him doing his job tbh.

If I was wwe I would give him a raise... He is a heel his go is to get heat... Thats the most bad ass thing ive heard in awhile.. Getting an event shut down, fuckin mission accomplished ... Heels cant do shit anymore to get heat

Regarding the incident, Jericho told WWE's website, "I made a bad judgment call in the course of entertaining [WWE] fans in Brazil. I apologized to the people in the crowd for showing disrespect. It was a bad move. I did it with [our] fans' entertainment in mind and I'll accept the consequences for that."

As for the subject at hand, I find the suspension to be ridiculous if it's anything but the PR move as others have said. Before you know it, they'll be referring to weapons as "international objects" because the word "foreign" is disrespectful and hurtful.

I've worked in a corporate structural this is what happens. Also this has nothing to do with being a good heel with the way the world is today you have to be smarter than trying to get cheap heat which is what this was. Jericho fucked up and he suspended for it. Quiet frankly its not like Chris Jericho has added anything to the product since coming back in the first place.

His debut was over the heads of most of hte crowd, his everyone is copying me went nowhere, his I'm the best in the World shit with CM Punk had to changed on the fly, the Drug stuff lost all its steam pretty quickly, CM Punk vs. Jericho at Wrestlemania was one of hte worst matches on the card, and besides a good Extreme Rules match at Extreme Rules he's done nothing of any value. This character is just flopping and now doing stupid shit like this for no reason did nothing for him
