IYH Wrestling

This topic seems to come up a lot on the board. "CM Punk isn't as good as The Rock." "John Cena isn't as good as Austin." Now I think these are high standards to live up to. I'd say in the history of wrestling you could maybe find 20 people on the level of The Rock. And then only two (Hogan and Flair) on the level of Steve Austin. So in everyone's opinion who fits into that group. Who in wrestling is/was as good as Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, Steve Austin, and The Rock.

Please don't give lame answers. Christian for example was not on this level. If someone didn't main event consistently for at least two or three years then probably were not Stone Cold level. Not to say they absolutely had to be a main eventer. But if they weren't there is probably a good reason.

scott steiner you could make the argument for he just was not in as many main events because of his tag team career.

macho man was easily as good as rock or austin. same with freddie blassie and terry funk. i think kurt angle is better than flair on so many levels

IYH Message Board Debut ~ The Beginning ~ Flame ~ II ~ ???

Prior to the late 1980s, pro wrestling was operated fully on a territory system. Therefore, I'm basing my choices here on the wrestlers' popularity within their territory, which happened to replicate throughout other markets nationally and internationally.

Fritz Von Erich, Jerry "The King" Lawler, Lou Thesz, Frank Gotch (the first wrestler to acclaim such status), Bruno Sammartino (I've heard stories that he wasn't as well-known outside the northeast, but his name has become iconic since he retired), Dusty Rhodes, The Undertaker, Verne Gagne (same as Sammartino, but in the mid-west), Roddy Piper, Randy Savage, Harley Race, Terry Funk, Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart.

*I think Gino Hernandez would have been on this list if he didn't pass away in January 1986. Moreover, I think Rick Rude was peaking as a performer in 1990.... would have been interesting to see his progression if the E took the belt off the Warrior and put it on Rude for the duration of 1990 into 1991.

I agree with most of what people have said. Macho Man for sure is one of those guys. I agree with Piper and Funk to. Some of them like Lawler and Undertaker I'm on the fence with. And anyone before the 80's I really don't know enough to comment.

I will say I don't think Bret and Shawn are on that level. Shawn possibly because of all the great stuff he did post 2002. But I think those two are more like HHH and Cena. Steve Austin and The Rock are pretty much the only reason WWE stayed in business after 1997. Hulk Hogan made wrestling mainstream. Ric Flair carried an entire promotion for over 20 years. These are the kinds of people we are talking about. These are the kinds of standards people should live up to be included here.

Shawn and Bret were very influential to the E from 1993 to 1997, especially Bret. Without either guy, I doubt the E would have even made it to 1997. They were over huge during that period.

Hell just about anyone from the late 80s wwe roster. Perfect, rude Debiasie piper, Kerry Von Eric, boss man, Andrea, ext.... If a guy like perfect or rude walked into the wee right now, instant superstar. Wrong time for them cause the cards were so well packed. Made for one hell of a show though.

Main event caliber guys, as to the current roster that is, there are tons of guys IMO that would have been superstars in this era

I's sticking with Lawler. For me the Kaufman Lawler thing, was main stream. More then just wrestling fans knew about this. And people still talk about it today. Lawler is also the only independent to survive Vince, mostly by aligning with him, but he still did. I think he is up there with Rock and Austin.
