WHY I LOVE DICKFebruary 19 12:41 PMby ELLE 0 Comments The first time I met Dick Avedon was on his bed. We were set to work together on one of my first styling jobsÂ?it was for a Japanese coach factory cosmetic campaign with Kevyn Aucoin. Mr. Avedon (or as he said with our first handshake, "Oh for God's sake, call me Dick.&quot, in his usual manner, was a man who liked to be prepared. He wanted a meeting to discuss "the woman." He summoned http://savebigshopping.com/ me to his brownstone studio up on East 74th Street. While the small narrow coach outlet studio had seen the trespassing of everyone from world leaders to rock stars, I was led up a flight of skinny stairs to his apartment above the studio instead. It was ecleticÂ?bohemian, coach factory in factÂ?with animal printed pillows and oriental rugs. In the middle of this loft was a large wood-carved, four-poster bed. "Sit down," he motioned.I obeyed. ImmediatelyÂ?and franticallyÂ?he pulled out boxes and boxes of Kodachrome contact sheets of Marilyn Monroe and Judy Garland, all circled and marked up with coach factory outlet online notations. I was mesmerized. Legendary photo sessions with legendary women by a legend himself. I could hear mumblings of phrasesÂ?"Maybe she should have a look of surprise," he'd sayÂ?but I wasn't coach factory listening. I was gawking. The meeting ended and the shoot the following week was short. Dick, the professional, wastes no time and the shoot itself lasted 30 minutes ("Why drag it out when you know you got it," he would explain). We went on to work a few more times together after that but never again did I get to sit on his bed and pore over every tiny frame of his incredible work. That one single afternoon wasÂ?ironically, like the slogan for one of his most successful ad campaigns for RevlonÂ?unforgettable. And that is why I love Mr. Avedon....um, I mean Dick. And if you're in Milan this week, stop by and have a look for yourself at the Forma Gallery, where Versace is sponsoring a retrospective. My personal favorite: The video room showing all his Versace campaigns over the years. Tags:
